A warm welcome to Garen Pay and his wife, Brenda, as Garen is inducted as Vicar of St. John’s this Sunday morning.  A potluck dinner in their honor will begin at 11:30 a.m., following the Bible Study/Sunday School hour.   Everyone is welcome!  Table service and drinks will be provided by the Board of Parish Ministry.

A NEW PHOTO DIRECTORY will be published by Olan Mills this fall.  Portraits will be taken the end of August.  Sign up in the Concourse for your appointment before or after worship services.  You may also sign up by going to our church web site, www.stjohnsem.org, and click the DIRECTORY SIGN UP link.  (see bulletin insert)

FOOD PANTRY REQUEST:  HAMBURGER AND TUNA HELPER AND Canned beef stew.  If you are willing and able, please bring next weekend and place in the food basket located in the Narthex.

BEWARE OF SCAMS!  It has been brought to our attention that some of our members have been approached but did not fall victim to these schemes.

Usually preying on grandparents and the elderly, phone calls are being made by scam artists who are pretending to be grandchildren or other relatives in some sort of financial trouble and in need of a very large amount of cash.  You will be asked to wire this “desperately needed” cash to a foreign country...or you may receive a recorded phone message asking you to call an unfamiliar area code (809, 284, and 876) for information about a relative that is ill, has been arrested, or has died, or that you have won a wonderful prize!   If you place the call from the US, you could apparently be charged  over $2,000 per minute!

EVANGELISM NOTE:

Luke 12:13 "Beware of covetousness!"  God warns us twice of danger coveting within the Ten Commandments.  Coveting is a desire for something or someone that you do not have.  Then, the apostle Paul goes on to tell us that he would not have even known that coveting is a sin, unless God had not said, 'you shall not covet (Romans 7:7).'

Human beings love to covet.  The world loves to covet.  The devil even covets our souls.  But God does not love coveting.  It is a dangerous attitude that only leads to more sin.  The only cure for this inner, sinful desire is Christ Jesus.  We strive hard to control our behaviors, but only God can cure our inmost desire as He fills us with Christ' love.

ALL CHURCH:  This years back-to-school bash is set for Friday, August 20th, from 6 - 8 pm.  We will have some wet & wild fun!  Stay after for a movie outside if you wish!  Everyone’s Invited!

St. John’s Golf Tournament and Family Picnic—Sept 12th

The St. John’s Family Golf Tournament will be Sunday, September 12th, with the first tee times starting at 2:30 pm.   This is intended as a family event and prizes have been organized for youth through senior citizens and men and ladies.  Last year we had 32 prizes to recognize and enhance the fun for this event.

We will be playing 9 holes best ball for 4 person teams.  Youth (7 years and older), women, and Senior citizens may use the forward tees. Green fees are $12.00, cart fees are $6.50 if you do not care to walk, and picnic fees are $5.00 with kids 12 and under eating free.  For safety purposes, cart drivers must be 18 years old.

Sign-up sheets are on the library counter.  It provides for indicating your intention to play 9 holes, whether you will want a cart and whether you want to attend the picnic afterwards.

If you have a pairing planned with other friends or family members, a pairing sheet is provided.  Just list each member of your party at the time you prefer to play.  If you have no preference with whom you play, Ralph Grotelueschen will make up the final pairing from the sign-up sheet.

You do not need to play golf to attend the picnic.  The picnic will start at about 5:30 pm or as soon as the first pairings come off the course.    Let’s make this an un-FORE-gettable day!
